Social Impacts of Acne

Although acne is quite a common occurrence in our society today it is still considered to be the largest contributor to feelings of low self esteem and social fears and anxieties today. The implications of acne in regards to psychological trauma and permanent social skill damage has not until recently been acknowledged or appreciated. In the past there were very few ways to treat acne; therefore everyone was forced to let it run its course, leaving everyone with the same acne breakouts, feeling little self consciousness. Today with so many different treatments many people are able to treat their acne effectively, while others may suffer for a more severe degree of acne making them feel self conscious and uncomfortable in their own skin.

Acne can significantly impact how any one person looks at life and recent studies have shown that the following feelings and emotions are without a doubt related to the humiliation of acne.

  • Social withdrawal

  • Decreased self esteem
  • Low self confidence
  • Poor concept of body image
  • Embarrassment
  • Feelings of depression and anger
  • Frustration
  • Higher rate of unemployment

When you take the time to think back to how you felt with your acne or now you feel now, it can be easy to see how many areas of your life can be affected by acne breakouts. The emotions listed above can clearly be seen as interrelated as one emotion causes another and you quickly find yourself in a vicious circle of social implications.

Many acne sufferers today still believe many of the old acne myths that it is genetic and nothing can be done about it and it has to do with personal hygiene, etc. These are in fact myths and by sticking to this old form of thinking you are further hurting yourself. There are so many new and improved research studies in relation to acne and new forms of treatment that many people are using successfully. It is time to abandon your old generation mind set and begin looking towards the future of acne treatments.

By trying the different products on the market today you will find that some work and some do not. Don't get discouraged, there is something out there for everyone. By taking action you do not have to enter into this cycle of social fears and anxiety, acne only has to be a temporary situation for those who care for their skin properly.
